Introducing the World’s First Line of Parametric Designed Game Tables

Billiards by Brandt once again pushes the boundaries in creating functional art.

You’ve seen it before but didn’t necessarily know it had a name. You were drawn into the shapes, the curves, the repetition … the rhythmic beauty. But what were you looking at? It most likely was parametric design, “where the relationship between elements is used to manipulate and inform the design of complex geometries and structures.”

Most people are familiar with this type of design as it is seen in architecture—blending complexity and variety, where inspiration is rooted in nature. When you really look at nature, you begin to see complex structures and “systematic patterns emerge throughout certain biomes.”

As other makers have come along, this design approach has moved into other areas, such as furniture. From benches to tables and wall coverings to reception desks, designers from around the world are creating beautifully organic pieces that transform spaces. At Billiards by Brandt, we’ve been inspired by these works and decided to create the world’s first line of parametrically designed game tables. Our first piece is the Ripple.

With its naturally inspired, fluid, and sculptural base, the Ripple bespoke pool table is an unusual and surprising departure from traditional design. Aesthetically pleasing and beautifully crafted, this is an eye-catching piece of modern art that meets functional fun.

The sectional nature of the Ripple brings an abstract and organic shape to life. The bottom of the table presents a view similar to the topology of a slot canyon in Utah and the ripples the wind makes as it blows against the canyons.

“Our work is shaped by everything around us. From the swirls of a seashell to the wind-drawn lines into the side of a mountain or the silhouette of a sneaker to the sharp angles of a building. We are drawn to various aspects or patterns in what we see and then we ask ourselves: 'what if we tried this?'

Not every idea works. And that's okay. Because every attempt we undertake is a moment of learning—whether it's successful or not. I've found over my years that the designers and builders that take the biggest risks are the ones that open the imagination of others. And our hope at Billiards by Brandt is that the work we undertake can inspire someone else, even if it's just to get them to ask themself 'what if?'.”

– Daniel Brandt

The second piece being developed by the craftsmen at Billiards by Brandt is the Step. Fun and funky, the cleverly constructed Step is a bespoke pool table where form meets function. Artistic and structural, the Step will most certainly be the focal point of any room.

The Step evokes the angles and curves of the joints within the fingers of a human hand. It is as if two fingers reflected in a mirror are propping up the billiard table just high enough for its players to play. There is an organic feel to the elevation that normally would be presented by a stilted leg fixed in place.

This is just the beginning of these designs at Billiards by Brandt. We have more sketches hidden away that we look forward to bringing to life. And we’re excited to collaborate with our clients and architects, interior designers, artists, musicians, and other creatives to further push the boundaries within this space and see what new parametric designed game tables we can create together.

If you're interested in one of these parametrically designed tables or have an idea for your own version or would just like to explore having a custom game table built, please don't hesitate to contact us.
